After the end of sweaty months of summer, I look forward to the cool and breezy monsoons. But the sudden weather change and the occasional chills are bound to make one feel unwell. The most affected with cold and cough because of the change in season are kids. While it would seem like a safe idea to keep the kids indoors, the contaminated air knows no walls. It is advisable to visit a pediatrician and take medication to cure cough and cold in kids. But with medication I also follow some simple home remedies to relieve the condition sooner. I also do not like to depend on syrups and medicines for too long. So here are some natural home remedies to soothe cough and cold in babies for Grandma’s age-old diary.
Ajwain/Carom seeds and garlic:
Dry roast 2 tablespoons of ajwain and 2-3 pods of garlic for 5 minutes on low flame. Take a piece of cloth or a handkerchief, put the seeds in it, tie up the ends to make a small potli(packet). While the seeds are still warm gently press the potli against the chest and back of your baby. Don’t forget to check the temperature on your own skin to avoid any burns on the baby’s skin. After you have done this for a few minutes, place the packet next to your baby where he can easily smell it. This remedy is suitable for infants, toddlers as well as oder kids.
Rub nutmeg against a kitchen stone or with a rolling-pin to make a coarse paste. Apply this paste on the nose of your baby while he is asleep. Nutmeg relieves the stuffed nose of the baby. This remedy is suitable for infants, toddlers and older kids.
Some people warn parents against using Vicks on the body for infants and toddlers, because of the burning sensation it may cause. A safer way of using Vicks is to apply it on a handkerchief and place it near the baby, so he constantly smells it. Vicks can also be diluted with coconut oil to make it suitable for kids. I use Vicks BabyBalsam which is mild, contains essential oils and is made for infants. To treat cold apply Vicks on the feet and cover them with socks.
You must be aware of the high nutritional value of garlic. Along with being a super food it also makes a super remedy for curing stuffy nose. Peel 4 to 5 garlic pods, pierce them into a thick thread using a needle and make a necklace. Make your baby wear this rustic piece of jewelry around his neck. Keep it short, so that the baby is unable to put it in his mouth.
This is not typically a home remedy, but the safest way of breaking up the congestion in the nose. Nasomist and Nasoclear are easily available Saline water drops. Put 2 to 3 drops of Saline drop in each nostril, keep the head of the baby tilted for a while, clean the excess water from the face with a cloth. Use these drops at least three times a day and watch it do its magic.
It is always a good idea to offer plenty of fluids to the baby when he has a cold and cough. It helps break up your congestion, makes the throat moist, and keeps the baby hydrated. Add a pinch of salt and turmeric powder to a glass of warm water and feed the baby a quantity, he comfortably accepts. Warm milk with turmeric powder also has soothing and healing properties. This remedy is best suitable for kids over 8 months of age.
Breathing in some steam immediately loosens up the stuffy nose. But giving steam to babies has its share of risks involved. The best time to give steam is when the baby is asleep. Place a humidifier or a pot of boiling water at a safe distance from the baby and direct the steam towards your baby. You can add eucalyptus oil or Vicks to the boiling water. Allow the baby to take in some moisture from the hot water while bathing.
Warm some Ghee and rub it out he chest, back, neck and feet of your baby.
Keep the baby warm and rested
Make sure you clean the baby’s nose often with a soft cloth
Don’t let that nasty cold get the best of your baby. I hope these tips help you take charge with simple do-it-yourself treatments. Do not try all of these remedies at once. You can try them at intervals and observe what helps your baby the most.
