The one time a woman goes through hell and heaven at the same time is – during her pregnancy. I say hell is because raising another human inside our body brings in unmatched joy with anxiety, doubt, nervousness and can be pretty daunting. As you gear up for this exciting and decisive period of life, one of your first decisions should be picking the right gynaecologist. You need to be absolutely comfortable with your gynaecologist, as he or she would see you through your thrilling nine-month journey, ending with the delivery of your bundle of joy. So the Best Gynaecologist is not a luxury but a necessity.
Having said that every woman is different, and so is every pregnancy. This means that all of us use different criteria for finding a doctor. However, there are some common factors one must consider before we say YES to Dr Right!
If you are not comfortable with male doctors, you need to filter them out of the list at the very beginning. A doctor is a professional, and the gender ideally should not matter. I had a male doctor who helped me through my pregnancy. If you are not comfortable with a male doctor, do not choose him no matter what others recommend.
#2 References and Recommendations
You cannot visit every doctor in your vicinity. So, the next best thing to do would be to ask your friends, family, neighbours, colleagues, or look for online reviews and recommendations. However, what worked for another person may not necessarily work for you, but this step will help you narrow down the list of doctors to choose from. There are trust worthy hospitals that provide lists and features of different gynaecologist to help you make a choice. One such hospital in Delhi for example, helps you select the best gynecologist in Delhi.
It could be difficult for a layperson to understand credentials above MBBS or MD. But we could check the number of years of experience, and the specialisation field. Find out if your doctor is also an obstetrician. You could also choose a doctor that has handled high-risk pregnancies if you have an underlying medical problem, have had miscarriages before or if you are having multiples. You must check the credibility of the hospital as well.
The best gynaecologist is the one that is available for you when you need them. You could book appointments in advance for your routine check-ups. But you must consider the following aspect –
– Would the doctor be available on call or email to answer your non-emergency queries.
– Would a doctor be available in case of an emergency
– how long would the waiting period be in case you visit for a non-scheduled appointment.
#5 Time allotted to you
One of the qualities of a good gynaecologist is the amount of time they spend with you. You wouldn’t want someone who rushes from one patient to the other. He should listen to you patiently and answer your smallest of doubts.
A good gynaecologist has a calm & positive personality. They should be by your side through the most vulnerable times. It is extremely important that you feel comfortable, safe and confident in their presence. You must ask yourself – Is my doctor pleasant? Is he/she positive and responsive? Is he/she friendly and approachable? Does he/she make me comfortable?
#7 The Entire Team
The whole team of the gynaecologist should be as good as the doctor himself. You are likely to spend more time with them than the doctor, especially on the day of the delivery. Make sure you are surrounded by positivity.
#8 Does he/she encourage vaginal birth?
The number of cesarean section births has been rising. Even though a child born either way is heathy and natural, you must ask your doctor if he/she would encourage and support a vaginal birth. Very often, expecting women are misguided into having a planned caesarean for reasons such as their baby’s cord around the neck. However, the best gynaecologist should be able to guide you and choose a surgery only as a last resort.
You need to work out the logistics. Whether you are insured or not! If yes, how much can you claim. If not, what would the cost of the consultation and delivery be?
#10 Trust your instincts
If you are not sure of your choice, you must reconsider. Even if there is a slight doubt or negative feeling you must take a call. Just because you have seen a gynaecologist few times does not mean you are obliged to continue the same one. Make a wise choice.
